What types of historical markers exist?
Historical signage falls into a few common categories: roadside markers that share the story of a place, National Register plaques mounted on listed buildings, state register medallions for officially recognized properties, and coordinated walking tour markers for heritage districts. Each serves a different purpose — we help you choose the right format.
What wording goes on a National Register plaque?
There is no required design — the National Park Service does not issue plaques. Most owners use the standard line, “This property has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior,” with the property name and its listing year, and some add a line of history. Your state preservation office may publish suggested wording; we lay out whatever you provide.
Bronze or aluminum — which should I choose?
Cast bronze is the traditional choice for historical work. It develops a dignified patina over time and is unmatched for permanence and prestige. Cast aluminum offers similar visual quality at a lighter weight and lower cost — ideal for larger markers, roadside and walking tour programs, or projects with budget considerations.
Do I need to be on a register to order one?
No. While many of our customers are officially listed on state or national registers, anyone can commission a custom historical marker. Property owners, families, businesses, and local organizations regularly commemorate their own historical significance with custom plaques. Markers built to last for generations — bronze plaques installed in the 1800s still stand today.
