Few garden ornaments make more sense than a sun on a sundial, and the Sun and Moon sundial puts both on one cast aluminum face, with a gnomon rising from the center. This listing is the Oil Rubbed Bronze version, the darkest finish in the line. It tends to go to people with a stone patio or a courtyard, where a dark dial stands out against light pavers.
About the Oil Rubbed Bronze finish
Oil Rubbed Bronze is the dark finish, and the raised sun and moon catch the light against it. It is an all-weather protective coating applied over the casting, and it comes with a five-year warranty. If you’d rather have Copper Verdigris or French Bronze, those two come on the Sun and Moon Sundial Quick-Ship, which is otherwise the same piece.
Cast in the USA, built to stay outside
The dial is recycled aluminum, cast in the USA, and it will not rust. Leave it out in snow, rain and August sun. There are no moving parts and nothing to bring in for winter. A rinse now and then is all the care it asks for, and American Cast Bronze Plaques is there if a question comes up.
Reading a Sun and Moon sundial
Set it level in a spot with open sky most of the day, and turn it so the gnomon points north. The shadow then crosses the hour marks as the sun moves. It reads sun time, which drifts from clock time by several minutes depending on the month, so don’t set your watch by it. Watch the shadow shorten toward noon instead. That is the whole pleasure of the thing.
This piece has no personalization, so it ships as shown. For something that moves with the weather rather than the sun, the weathervanes come from the same casting process. And the rest of the sundial line covers birds, insects and a sailboat if the Sun and Moon sundial isn’t quite the one.
